My Love Affair with Music

Although my own musical talent could be best described as a train wreck you really don’t want to hear, music has played a big part in my life. It has helped me through the heartbreak of a love that didn’t last, the buzzkill of a horribly mundane job, and calmed my nerves upon taking off when flying. But music has also brought joy, new friends, and a ton of fun into my life.

Do you remember the music you listened to in high school and college? I do. In high school, like most teenage girls of my generation, I was a sucker for a love song. I listened mainly to the words. The cheesier, the better. In college, I started listening to the beat of a song. I liked the ones that made me want to throw my self-consciousness to the wind and just dance. I bet some of you were on that dance floor with me! Good times!

Eventually, I started hearing the words, beat, and music come together into a thing of beauty. I was mesmerized and curious about the artists who created this greatness. Not only did I want to see them perform these wonderful songs, I wanted to know more about them.

So in December 2019, I started putting into action an idea that had been floating around in my head for a few years. The big idea? A film festival that screened only music documentaries. I had seen several music documentaries shown in theaters and realized I wasn’t the only one interested in the people behind the music I loved. I also felt a bond with the other music lovers in the theater watching these films – a community of music lovers. That’s what I wanted to create.

My plans were coming together nicely. Then March 2020 happened. You’ve probably heard the old saying that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Well, it seems this time around, the lion didn’t leave. The pandemic brought live events to a screeching halt. I don’t know about everybody else, but I thought it would all blow over in a few months. Well…here we are, seven months later.

After getting over the initial shock of a worldwide pandemic, I got back into planning mode. I still had a lot of work to do, even if the dates for the festival were tentative. I also wanted to start building a community. So I decided to launch this website that includes blog posts where I, and other writers, can share cd reviews, biography/autobiography reviews, music documentary reviews, interviews with artists, and various other tidbits you might find interesting. So sit back, put on your favorite music, and start reading. We’ll have a new post every Tuesday.

Be sure to follow us on Facebook and leave a comment telling me about your favorite music memory. See you next Tuesday!
